THE FALL AT KORAKUEN HALL
August 30th:
CJW Comet GP 2024 Night One
Korakuen Hall
Katsu is reacquainted with a certain woman from her past...
Korakuen Hall. Hallowed ground in the wrestling world and the traditional home for the start and end of COSMIC Joshi Wrestling’s Comet GP. With the company’s growth, the grand finale has usually moved to larger venues. But the first two nights have typically occurred here. With a big non-tournament match as the main event, it is a packed ground, likely contesting or potentially beating their record for an opening night attendance in this venue. This match has some unique history as will be discussed.
With a sea of fans, the venue is tightly packed, hot, as the CJW ring is set up. The hard camera side of the ring is opposite to the large section of fans to show the screen which plays the video graphics via a projector. At ringside is a row of commentators, with, for the first time for the entirety of the tournament, English commentary with the Irish Stallion and Stephanie Starr, the only foreign competitor to make the finals of the tournament.
James O’Connell: “Night One of the Comet GP has been eventful with the Stars Block taking center stage. Tomorrow night will be the Planets Block kicking off. For the main event, the only champion not in the tournament due to prior commitments, Katsu, will try to go for defense number six, winning the belt back in February and…it is against the returning ‘La Prima,’ Mia Kanemaru.”
Stephanie Starr closes her eyes and takes a deep breath. She has been dreading it.
Stephanie Starr: “I’ll fill them in. Mia was expected to be one of the initial building blocks of CJW. Trained at the same time as Rin. She quit CJW a number of years ago, instead wrestling in JWP and even in Europe across the independent scene. She claimed she was held back due to her being Half-Italian… But it has been denied by those in charge at the time. The last match she had was against a rookie Katsu, not even known as Vampyra or Vampiress at the time, and she bullied the young girl despite having her clearly beaten until a referee called for the bell and everyone from the back rushed out.”
James O’Connell: “We can’t really speak for the state of CJW at the time. But she has become champion in JPW twice since then, her first reign lasting over a year, and second… She was until her contract expired. Thus, leading to her return the same night as the Young Blood finals and laying out the challenge for Katsu.”
Stephanie Starr: “A lot has changed since then, for both Mia and Katsu. Years since the match, but it is a black mark on CJW and I don’t think Katsu has forgotten... I know I haven't.”
The match graphic appears on the screen, Katsu holding up her title belt, with Mia Kanemaru, with her top notch fashion sense. Yoko Arita clears her throat and makes the introduction.
Yoko Arita (Translation): “Ladies and gentlemen, the following match is your Comet GP 2024 Night One Main Event! It is scheduled for one fall with a sixty minute time limit and it is for the Intergalactic COSMIC Championship!”
The droning of “Suppuration” begins to play through the Korakuen Hall. The screen behind the stands shows a video of Mia Kanemaru going through various poses with a red, white, and green set of graphics. After about thirty seconds, Mia makes her way out through one of the corner aisles with a robe that wraps around her stomach, long pants with holes in the side of them, and boots. Her platinum hair has an undercut, she’s known to mix up her style. There is an unmistakable charisma and aura about her. She looks with a smug look and the CJW fans, knowing her sketchy history with CJW, jeer her.
James O’Connell: “La Prima. The Japanese-Italian Dream. The CJW crowd, maybe not feeling she’s ‘earned’ this title opportunity due to her exit years ago and sudden return, give her a negative reaction.”
Stephanie Starr stands up from her commentary desk position and doesn’t speak into her microphone. She looks at Mia and just feels a rush of negative emotions come up. Her exit. Potentially using an excuse to dismiss her shortcomings while she has earned her status as a ‘legend’ while fighting the stigma that comes with being an outsider. Mia Kanemaru walks near-by and gives a small ‘wave’ to the CJW legend and continues her walk around the ring.
James O’Connell: “I think I’ll be carrying the load for this match?”
Stephanie Starr: “Sorry, James. I really need to bite my tongue here. I want to stay as professional as I can.”
James O’Connell: “I get it. Negative history aside, Mia’s talent and world-wide experience is a boon for CJW. Assuming everything is okay ‘behind the scenes.’ But she has a test against a woman who has not been pinned in any company since September 3rd last year. Any loss has come from someone else being pinned, or in a match where it is not an option.”
Heading up the steps, Mia Kanemaru enters the ring as Yoko introduces her.
Yoko Arita (Translation): “Introducing the challenger, in the Blue Corner. From Chiba by way of Italy, La Prima…”
Kanemaru spreads out her arms.
Yoko Arita (Translation): “Kanemaaaruuu Miiiiiiiiaaaaaaaaaa!”
And Mia extends one hand forward, holding her chin with the other. She loves the camera. She loves the spotlight. She is first in her mind, always. She removes her jacket as her theme music fades and is replaced by that of the champion.
The J-Rock music of Katsu brings a strong positive reaction from the Korakuen Hall faithful. Entering through the opposite side, the Intergalactic COSMIC Champion has her white strapped title around her waist, wearing YDS colours of black, white, and neon splashes, signature cape, and has her arms crossed with ‘kitsune heads’ and then spreads them out wide, other kitsune mask on her face. She does a throat slashing gesture with her finger and removes the entrance mask, showing a determined look on her face. The FWA wrestler walks around ringside, taking the time to be near the fans. She stops near a young fan who has a YDS banner and she hands her the entrance mask.
James O’Connell: “CJW, FWA, Katsu has become international, and growing her fans, especially some of the younger fans. Defend her title in Hammerstein Ballroom in New York, a couple days later, competing for one of FWA’s top prizes, the North American Championship, in a match featuring two Hall of Fame quality competitors, and one on his way.”
Stephanie Starr: “She’s been successful on both sides of the Pacific, but I know she’s been feeling an ‘imbalance’ between both promotions. Champion in one, came second at Carnal Contendership, just knocked out of the way before she could get the killing blow at Back in Business.”
James O’Connell: “Though she has a chance to ‘right’ that balance at FWA Anniversary in Golden Opportunity, tonight-”
Stephanie Starr: “It is about sending that treacherous... dog back where she came-”
Finishing her walk around the ring, Katsu slides onto the apron and opens her cape, showing her championship off. She swings into the ring and removes her belt. Yoko Arita does her introduction.
Yoko Arita (Translation): “And her opponent, in the red corner. Representing YOKAI Death Squad, FWA, from Osaka, Intergalactic COSMIC Champion, the Kitsune Warrior…”
Getting on the turnbuckle, Katsu does a throat slash with her finger and holds her title up high.
Yoko Arita (Translation): “Kaaaaatsssuuuuuuuu!”
Putting the championship on her shoulder, Katsu pats the main plate before jumping down. She hands it off to the official and CJW’s co-owners in the ring as her theme music fades. Despite the tension in the air which comes with a title match, the typical ceremony goes off without a hitch. Both competitors pose on opposite sides as the referee and a company representative hold up the championship. The fans clap and both ladies get a quick weapons check from the official. WIth the go ahead, the bell rings and the match begins-
1/60
Intergalactic COSMIC Championship
Katsu (Champion) VS Mia Kanemaru (Challenger)
And both Mia and Katsu meet in the middle of the ring, holding each other by the back of the head and throwing forearms!
James O’Connell: “And this match starts off HOT!”
Stephanie Starr: “Get her!”
Despite being smaller, Katsu is going in with fire and determination. She remembers when Mia Kanemaru left. She also remembers how Back in Business ended. Second is not good enough. She is going to be first.
Ducking an elbow shot, Katsu runs off the ropes and flies with a headscissors takedown, then a single leg dropkick, catching the challenger on the chin! Mia Kanemura rolls out of the ring. She may have fought this woman before, but not the Kitsune Warrior!
Stephanie Starr: “Come on, you wanted this match, get in the ring!”
James O’Connell: “You know this strategy, Steph. Take time out of the ring if your opponent comes in hot and-”
Stephanie Starr: “I know, I know.”
Letting out a shout, Katsu fires up the crowd, she wants this to be over and she wants it done fast. She motions for a couple of fans to move as there are no barricades. She runs off the far ropes and hits a suicide dive, sending her and Mia crashing into the open chairs!
James O’Connell: “And a suicide dive!”
Pulling herself off the floor, Katsu sees Kanemaru crawling through the chair and knows she needs to keep on top of her opponent. The announcer shouts for the fans to back away as they head towards the stands!
James O’Connell: “They are heading into the crowd!”
Stephanie Starr: “And in a situation like this, the referee may let them go without a count, at least not right away.”
With a title on the line, the referee goes to the outside to encourage the wrestlers to bring the fight back in the ring and to ensure the fans keep their distance. Katsu throws forearms and the challenger, nowhere to run, fights back as they head up the steps. Going near the rails, the challenger grabs Katsu by the ear (the fox one) and throws her into them! They rattle but they do not break as she then pulls her up… into a Canadian backbreaker position.
James O’Connell: “Mia may throw her over the railing-”
And the champion escapes, landing on her feet and pushing Mia! She grabs the railing, preventing her from tumbling back down the stairs, but she tries to get distance. Katsu, knowing that attempting a dive over stairs may not end up well for her, follows, keeping close.
James O’Connell: “They have spent a grand total of 15 seconds in the ring so far in this match.”
Stephanie Starr: “And I’m not sure how long it will be until they get back.”
Near where Kanemaru entered, Katsu finally gets on a stable round and does a hard roundhouse kick to her opponent’s chest level! She kicks her again in the leg, then again to the chest! Grabbing Mia by the head, she throws her towards the side of the stands and the challenger crashes shoulder first into the steel!
Stumbling, Mia is near a table and leans on it. Katsu unloads with a superkick, catching her opponent on the chin before letting out a yell!
James O’Connell: “I have not seen Katsu THIS determined for a match. I know there’s history. She remembers this woman bullying and picking on her as a rookie, but there has to be something extra lighting a fire under her.
Stephanie Starr: “She’s going to be the new ‘La Prima’ by the end of this…”
And Katsu… seeing the spot Mia Kanemaru is in… gets an idea. She pulls herself up on the stands alongside the railing and goes up.
James O’Connell: “Hold on, Katsu. Think about it.”
Stephanie Starr: “She dove off a cage in New York. I think she’s slowly getting a taste for it…”
The crowd near her cheer as Katsu steadies herself. She lifts her self up...
And flips backwards for a moonsault-
AND MIA KANEMARU MOVES OUT OF THE WAY AS SHE LANDS ONTO THE TABLE!
James O’Connell: “And the champion crashes and burns!”
Bouncing off the table, it does not break, Katsu falls backwards onto the floor, the smaller table landing on top of her and the crowd gasps.
Stephanie Starr: "I... I think that table not breaking made it worse."
Mia Kanemura looks shocked by the aftermath as the official rushes in. He moves the table as Katsu lets out a scream of pain, holding her ribs. But, before a physician at ringside can check, she rolls to her back and waves it off.
James O'Connell: “She wants to continue... Call it heart, call it being hard-headed, youthful pride. Whatever.”
Knowing she has the all clear-
Mia Kanemaru kicks Katsu in the ribs as she lets out a scream. Then-
She top mounts her and delivers a headbutt! Again and again! She then stomps again on the ribcage! The crowd begins to jeer as she is ramping up her attack and she loves it. Grabbing Katsu, she scoops her up and sends her back first into the ring post and sets her down on the apron!
James O’Connell: “That fall may have cost Katsu the match.”
Pulling herself up by the ropes, Katsu is favouring her ribs heavily as the official. Kanemaru rolls into the ring and takes her time. The camera zooms in to see a huge red mark across Katsu’s stomach, halfway between the belly button and the bra.
James O’Connell: “That does not look pleasant.”
Stephanie Starr: “I think she might have a broken rib from the fall. At the very least a deep deep bruise.”
Seeing a literal red mark, Mia runs forward and drives a knee to the midsection in the corner. Katsu lets out a scream as she holds her ribs. The challenger has a big smirk on her face as she runs back and boots Katsu across the face!
Pulling her in the middle of the ring, she puts the Kitsune Warrior in a suplex position. Picking her opponent up…
James O’Connell: “-Already?!”
And drops her head first into the mat with a Suplex Piledriver!
James O’Donnell: “La Prima Driver!”
Stephanie Starr: “No… No.”
The audience gasps as La Prima hooks the leg and the official counts-
ONE…
TWO…
THREE!
Result:
Mia Kanemura By Pinfall at 4:47
-NEW CHAMPION-
The Korakuen Hall crowd fell hush for a moment, with the fans looking amongst one another. The match could have gone either way, but it ended THAT fast!? Mia Kanemura gets to her knees and wipes her face, showing a sly grin. Katsu going for a big risk early-
Just cost her the first singles title she won in CJW. As her theme music continues to play. Finally, Yoko makes the official announcement.
Yoko Arita (Translation): “And your winner by pinfall at 4:47, the 21st Intergalactic COSMIC Champion… Kanemaruuu Miiiaaaa!”
The fans jeer as finally, she is announced the winner and is handed the Intergalactic COSMIC Championship and the winner’s trophy. She poses with the title and trophy as Katsu rolls out of the ring, shocked. Rushing from backstage are her YOKAI Death Squad teammates.
James O’Connell: “I’m shocked by the result we witnessed. Katsu reigned for over half the year, won it in a CJW Match of the Year contender, but now? It is over all thanks to one dive. Stephanie? Hey, Steph, are you-”
James looks to see Stephanie Starr remove her headset and walk away to the back. She’s furious at seeing Mia Kanemaru winning one of the company’s top prizes.
The camera looks towards Katsu who is still favouring her stomach, and now has her neck to worry about. Ririko puts her hand on her friend’s shoulder, trying to comfort her, but Katsu can’t even look her in the eye. She failed. She failed hard. Even if she may have gotten hurt…
She’s never lost like that. At least not in years. As the camera focuses on Mia Kanemaru putting the championship title around her waist, Katsu walks towards the back-
Backstage, in the usual area for post-match interviews, a camera man alongside some other members of the media are placed to catch wrestlers heading to the locker room. In front of the screen with the company and show logo along with various sponsors, Katsu stumbles, sitting on a bench. Her friends are behind her and sit down around her. The promo Mia is giving the crowd echoes in the background. Ririko speaks first.
Ririko (Translation): “Are you okay!?”
Katsu closes her eyes. She’s upset, furious at herself, not even able to give an answer. Then again, Ririko probably means both in terms of her physical health and emotionally after the sudden loss. REO, without her facepaint on, pats Katsu on the shoulder. Katsu’s been a good mentor to her the past several weeks, no, year. Even with the sting of her Back in Business loss, Katsu encouraged her throughout the Young Blood tournament, giving her the first notable accomplishment of her’s in CJW.
Miyu looks at Katsu’s stomach where she hit the end of the table. The Deathmatch loving Idol knows her injuries.
Miyu Kawamato (Translation): “That looks like a deep bruise. I think we should make sure nothing is broken.”
Katsu (Translation): “What does it matter?”
Katsu mutters, frustrated.
Katsu (Translation): “I came up short… again. Again!”
Ririko, Miyu, and Reo blink. Again? Sure she lost at Back in Business, but again?! She was on an unpinned streak for a year. As for Cali, having talked with her after the match.
She knows more.
Cali Hayama (Translation): “Doctor. See him.”
She stresses to Katsu.
Cali Hayama (Translation): “Then we talk. Okay?”
Even with her only ‘adequate’ Japanese, she gives off a stern tone, like an older sister trying to babysit their younger sibling. Rubbing her eyes, Katsu does her best not to cry, not in front of the media anyways. Yep, the reason why she only agreed to ‘share’ the leadership position. In terms of who is the ‘Best’ in the ring, the ace and poster child of the group, it is probably her. But in terms of having leadership qualities, it is Cali Hayama. Always been, and now, she's acting in the best interest for not just the group, but one of her best friends.
Nodding her head, Katsu stands up, wincing as she feels the pain in her stomach area. The group follows her, supporting their teammate and friend.
